The Kia ProCeed is not to be mistaken for the older Pro_cee'd which was a small hatch. This newer model, minus the awkward punctuation, is classed as a shooting brake - essentially an estate car with some added style.
The Kia Proceed was launched in 2018 following a ground-up redesign with new bodywork. This sporty looking station wagon does have four doors plus a tailgate, making it less a true sporting brake – but it offers some of the fun you'd expect with the family friendly functionality of an estate style car.
This launched with looks to impress, thanks to the original Audi TT designer Peter Schreyer being behind a lot of that. As such you have those swept-back headlights with LED daytime running lights, aggressive-looking grille and second grille on the lower bumper. Add sculpted door panels, flush handles, slim tail lights and fake exhaust tips and you have what is this sporty looking estate. Go for the 18-inch alloys and this looks every bit the sports car.
The reality is that this looks more sporty than it feels with the range of petrol or turbo diesel engines churning out between 140 BHP and 204 BHP at the top end. There are six-speed auto or manual options to suit different driving styles.
Inside this offers lots of room, enough for a family, and the boot with its 594 litres makes this a huge space for storage and transporting. In 2021 Kia gave this model a facelift, with a new logo, revised grille, upgraded headlights, overhauled interior and more upholstery choices.
Key rivals for the Kia ProCeed include the Ford Focus Estate, Volkswagen Golf Estate and Skoda Octavia Estate in the VRS version if you want that sporting look.
The Kia ProCeed is a great car for anyone that needs the functionality of an estate but still wants to enjoy the sporty styling of a more agile vehicle.
For true sporting performance, beyond the looks alone, you'll need to go for the top-end GT variant with that 201PS to really feel there is the take-over punch that makes this car's sporty feel useful on the roads.
Whatever version jumps out at you there will be plenty of room with that large boot space and enough for four tall adults to sit comfortably in this longer car. That space not being sacrificed for speed, performance and style is tough to find and Kia has done well here to manage a good balance of all.
Even the basic spec comes with Kia's amazing warranty that helps justify the price of this car almost alone. You get a huge seven year warranty or, if it comes first, 100,000 mile warranty – in either case it's one of the best you can get from any manufacturer. And this also means these cars hold their value as even when buying used models still means getting that impressive cover.
On the newer version of the Proceed you can expect an attractive and genuinely useful 12.3-inch instrument cluster plus a 10.25-inch screen for infotainment. While it is modern there are still plenty of physical knobs and buttons to make controls straight-forward and easy to access.
The engines available come in the form of three petrol variants, and two diesel, all being front-wheel drive, including older models.
There are two trim options to pick from: GT-Line and GT-Line S. In the most recent variant the diesel range has been dropped and there are just two petrol options to pick from.
Expect a relatively comfortable ride but with the sportier setup certainly helping you feel the road more. A body lowered by 5mm, softer anti-roll bars and stiffer springs all combine to offer decent down force that's useful in corners.

The Kia ProCeed comes in two trims for new models: GT-Line and GT-Line S with two turbocharged petrol engines. Go for older models and you also have a selection of two turbocharged diesels to pick from.
The GT-Line comes with lots of features like those massive digital displays, cruise control, air con, electric windows, and parking cameras.
Jump up to the GT-Line S and you get a lot of extras including 18-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof, bleach leather with suede seat upholstery, power seat adjustments, smart parking assist, smart key entry, eight-speaker JBL audio system, wireless phone charger, blind spot collision warning, heated seats, smart cruise, and paddle shifters.
Even on the older models you can expect Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality inside as well as sat nav and DAB radio. While the older 1.6 offers plenty of power the 1.5 GDi shouldn't be overlooked as that can also churn out a burst of pace with a better fuel economy.

The Kia Proceed range from Band A through to Band F for road tax, depending on the model and engine you opt for. That means you can pay as little as nothing - until 2015 at least - or as much as the standard £180 rate.
The Kia ProCeed starts at insurance group 12 and runs up to 16 for the petrol models and it hits group 23 for the diesel engines. That should mean you can expect to pay more for those older diesel engines that are now discontinued.
